Time is ticking for Cardano users as Midnight kicks off its highly anticipated Glacier Drop, but not everyone can claim it just yet. The privacy-focused blockchain, built on Cardano’s service layer, confirmed on X that the token claim process is now live. The 60-day window began immediately, and eligible wallets can already start claiming their $NIGHT tokens.
However, not all ADA holders are celebrating. Users relying on Ledger hardware wallets hit a technical roadblock. Midnight’s team discovered that Ledger does not currently support CIP-8 message signing for payloads larger than 31 bytes. The Glacier Drop’s payload is 251 bytes. Consequently, this incompatibility prevents Ledger users from verifying ownership and participating right away.
Temporary Fix Coming for Ledger Users
Charles Hoskinson, co-founder of Cardano, acknowledged the issue on X. He explained that Ledger had been notified back in July but hasn’t provided a timeline for the needed update. Hence, developers are implementing a workaround using a method common in NFTs. This fix involves signing a null transaction with metadata, allowing Ledger users to claim their tokens.
Besides, Hoskinson reassured users that the two-month window ensures no one will lose their chance. He advised affected users to return at the end of August, as there is no benefit in rushing.
Keystone Wallet Steps Up
Meanwhile, Keystone Wallet users in response to the CEO’s post reported a smooth claiming process via Eternl Wallet.
Notably, Cardano Stake Pool Operator Giovanni EASY1 also had something to say on the update. According to him, Keystone supports Ledger derivation paths. Therefore, users can restore their Ledger accounts on Keystone and claim tokens without issues.
Midnight’s Glacier Drop is a key example illustrating the excitement and complexity surrounding multi-chain launches. Since hardware wallet support is now a crucial user requirement, interoperability and developer coordination have become immediately necessary instead of optional concerns.
