The first incident was in June 2022 when an employee at Customer.io had accessed user data for malicious reasons. It had leaked millions of email addresses, including those of high-profile users such as former Binance CEO CZ.
However, the situation has escalated. With the email addresses now fully public, experts warn of increased phishing campaigns targeting OpenSea users. If additional personal details were included in the leak, the risks could extend even further.
Crypto phishing remains a significant problem. In 2024 alone, such scams caused losses exceeding $500 million, affecting over 330,000 addresses. Hackers have also targeted official company accounts to spread fraudulent content. Recently, Litecoin’s X account was hijacked to promote fake tokens.
OpenSea has not yet issued a statement on this latest development. Meanwhile, SlowMist encourages users to increase their security. This would mean password changes, enabling two-factor authentication, and being vigilant against phishing emails.
The crypto community is in a challenge of trying to outsmart the threats while scammers take advantage of every vulnerability.
